Austin Teh Bao Xiang, a student of welding technology from Keningau Vocational College, won a gold medal for his innovation at a recent virtual innovation contest hosted by a Malaysian school in collaboration with several institutions. Austin’s project known as Grinder Supporting Tool was his final year project that he designed to help welders cut and weld metal plates in a more convenient manner. He submitted his prerecorded presentation video to the International Digital Innovation and Invention Challenge 2021 organized by SM Sains Pasir Puteh, Kelantan in March 2021. When the results were announced on 20 April 2021, he was one of the gold medal recipients.
Austin Teh designed a tool that could complement welding-related work in order to enable welders attain workpieces that meet the expected quality. He felt that there is a lack of support for arms positions when welders cut metal plates using grinders. He cited this as a reason why the workpieces were not in a good quality as welders’ arms regularly shifted when holding the grinder. The process was also time-consuming and exhausting. Hence, he invented this tool in order to help welders perform the task better. The director of the college, Johari @ Jaibet Bin Sabin, expressed his delight in his accomplishment that showed vocational college students possess creativity and competence in their respective specialties.
