Vocational Students Developed STEM Materials for Preschool Children

A group of four students from Early Childhood Education programme at Keningau Vocational College showcased their teaching materials at International Joint Conference on STEM Education 2020 via virtual posters. The conference was organized by several associations in Indonesia on 18-19 November 2020. Their projects were related to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) as they developed them to familiarize children with scientific concepts and mathematical formulas.

Two of the students, Erynna Syeffera Lucas and Werollisa Elna Wilber, presented their project named “Counting Cube”. It was a pentagon-shaped box where mathematical questions and numbers could be attached on its surface for children to solve and comprehend when playing with it. Meanwhile, Elesta Sawadi and Denciscka Ellyvia Sidin, put their “Wheel of Life” on virtual display during the conference. It was a set of teaching aids that comprised a huge wheel with pictures of different animals on it and soft darts. The children threw their darts on the wheel while it was spinning and whenever the darts hit any of the animal photos, they had to describe the life cycle of the animal. The video of them explaining this project can be accessed from this link: https://youtu.be/BDaJ_yQivKQ

These students, along with their classmates, were also recognized for their educational outreach project “Wonder Zone” in June 2020 by Global Social Leaders when this project was listed as the recipient of Learning Award for their efforts to promote STREAM (STEM + Literacy + Arts). Mr. Johari Sabin, the director of the college, lauded the students’ exceptional work in exploring their creativity to improve their teaching practice.
